I’ve always been taught that skincare is much more important than make up. That being said, this year I’ve made an effort to take better care of my skin and continually ease up on the amount of makeup I wear. Summer is an optimal time to put that into further motion, since I’m sure the last thing anyone wants to think about in hot temps are the cosmetics melting off their face! Here are the tried and true, key products I’ve been using all summer long to keep things simply, easy, and fresh.

I discovered the world of oils this past winter when my skin broke out due to dryness, and this TATCHA Camellia Beauty Oil is gold (literally: there are flecks of it inside the oil!) – in fact, their whole brand is pretty amazing and worth checking out! Light yet rich, I warm a few drops of this in my hands and apply it to a clean face, and run the leftover through damp hair which gives it serious shine.

I was introduced to my first lash serum, NutraLuxe Lash MD a few months ago by my friend Erin… and I can’t keep track of how many people have asked about my lashes since. My short, straight ones have more than doubled in length; I don’t wear eyeliner on most days now! (avail. at Bare Wax Bar in Vancouver)

This NARS Tinted Moisturizer with SPF is another recommendation from Erin (can you tell she’s my personal beauty advisor?). I put it on sparingly with a stippling brush, and it gives just enough coverage while providing much needed SPF.

Aerin make up is more than just pretty packaging, and this Bronzer and Gloss are been the perfect shades of pink for lighter skin. Everything in this line also happens smells like roses… enough said!

A small pump of this Tom Ford Illuminator goes a long way: I dab a little on the apples of my cheeks, and will sometimes actually mix a bit of it into the NARS Tinted Moisturizer for special occasions. (avail. at Holt Renfrew in Vancouver)

Do you have any favourite beauty products this summer? I’d love to hear about them!

  1. My favorite beauty product is the “Super Spot Remover” with 1.5% salicylic acid I think, by Origins. This works great to treat and heal major zits during our period within 2-4 days! I break out big, painful zits and pimples during my menstrual cycle and this does a good job at treating it by 1) reducing redness and 2) and size in a quick manner. LOVE IT!

  2. Aerin is such a gorgeous brand! I wish it was more accessible in my area.

I’m too fair to rely on the SPF in makeup products, so I often eschew TM and foundation in the summer months and just wear touches of concealer (MAC Studio Fix is great, as is IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye). Cetaphil SPF50 moisturizer is my current jam where skin care is concerned. It absorbs well and lasts all day on my normal-to-dry skin. (It also doesn’t break me out, which is a major plus given that my skin has gotten more sensitive as I age!) When I do need a base, I really like Missha Perfect Cover BB cream because it doesn’t add too much shine, has the light-medium coverage I prefer, and it’s long lasting.

Most bronzers are too warm for my cool skin, so I like a tad of neutral blush on my cheeks. Maybelline did a great mousse blush that was sadly D/Ced, so I’m probably going to try NYX next. For illuminators, I am a NARS loyalist; their products give you some real value for your dollars given how pigmented they are. I love Copacabana for a bold, silvery look and Albatross for a warmer glow. (I’d recommend Orgasm for warmer, darker skin tones.). Buxom also does a gorgeous liquid highlighter that goes on subtle, though it’s a tad too dark and warm for my winter skin. I love mixing it with foundation or tracing it over the highlight points of my face.

I’m a consummate bold lip girl, but I admit summer brings out the softer side in me. Love Bobbi Brown High Shimmer lipgloss for an easy touch of summer sparkle – Bronzed Heather is my go to! Chanel’s Glossimer range is also fantastic. For lipstick, Dior’s Addict Extreme line is comfortable and light for summer (Incognito is the perfect summer nude!), while Guerlain’s Rouge Automatique line brings the drama with its luxurious formula.
