Over the past few years, I’ve become much more interested in building up a wardrobe consisting of quality basics such as silk blouses, wool/cashmere coats, and leather pants, to name a few. I know this isn’t exactly groundbreaking news, but this black cashmere turtleneck (also worn here, here & here) has really proven to be one of my best purchases ever and is definitely indispensable in my closet. Making smarter shopping decisions and buying less are steps I’m actively taking to edit my closet into a good one – and for me, that means excellent basics, peppered with separates that have outstanding details (like this jacket). What does your dream closet look like?
Wearing: Zara peplum, trench and pumps (similar), J.Crew turtleneck, Aritzia trousers, Jeweliq necklace, Nixon watch (c/o Watch Co.)

  1. I’m trying to do the same. I’m finally getting to the point of being satisfied with nearly every item I own! It’s taken years of selling my “unwanteds” to get there!

  2. LOVE that top! I’m still trying to figure out what my dream closet looks like – one unwanted item at a time. lol

  3. I totally get what you’re saying about picking up the quality pieces. I’ve been trying recently to pick up great basics and build my wardrobe on pieces that’ll last awhile. I go through my wardrobe and try to get rid of anything that isn’t classic. Shameless!
I really love this outfit, you look so lovely!

  4. I agree! I’m starting to stock up on quality basics so I can jazz up an outfit with fun, cheaper accessories!

  5. I love the way you allow your long sleeves to peek out from beneath your jacket.. I would have no idea how to roll it up like that without cutting off circulation to my hands!

  6. I’ve been working on a similar closet project for the past while as well although I have been focused on investing in quality/designer pieces as opposed to fast fashion items. I’ve also been trying to pare down my closet a ton since I own way too many clothes! Love this outfit, Jen :)

  9. Such a great idea Jen! I think it’s easy to get caught up in purchasing what catches your eye (I sure do it) and it takes skill to actively say that you are going to build a closet instead of just purchase. Lovely outfit too btw! xo

  10. I always love your classic outfits! and I agree that turtleneck was an amazing purchase! xo

  11. I think you’re the resident expert of the internet on tailored and polished layering. This looks absolutely flawless.

I would highly recommend a few reads on Parisian style that talks about editing your wardrobe! I think it’s in line with your mission:

    and

I have both of these on my iPad and it definitely has me re-thinking my sartorial choices. It’s a great guide for editing a closet down to the luxe basics but also helps you stay on point with budget AND style. I love Ines de la Fressange’s book. It gives you good visuals. And the Lessons book actually has a step by step guide for editing the closet down to the perfect items.

  14. I’m trying to do the same thing and it’s a tough process for me – both the shopping and the weeding out.

  15. I always love how you layer your peplums! This blue top looks great with the black pants and beautiful trench.
