Coffee Break

November 9, 2012

One of the more challenging things for me sartorially is to put together an outfit that I like when wearing flats… especially in the winter. Being a short (and not stick-thin) girl, it can be hard to appear proportionate in heel-less footwear when there is so much bulk involved by way of all the sweaters and coats. This year, I’m challenging myself to do that a little bit better, and plan to share the journey with you… hopefully inspiring a couple of fellow petites along the way! To get started, I took full advantage of the dry weather recently and pulled out these summery flats for an afternoon coffee date. How do you feel in flats?
Wearing: random old jacket, Club Monaco shirt, YesStyle vest, T.Babaton pants (via Aritzia), Stuart Weitzman shoes (c/o – on sale here), necklace from The Bay, Coach bag, MAC lip pencil in Brick

Hey, at least it’s warmer where you are! Here in Toronto, my standard winter wardrobe consists either of big sweaters, skinny pants and tall boots or dresses, tights and tall boots. I try to avoid regular shoes and regular pants because I don’t want to get the bottoms of my pants wet thanks to the snow (this isn’t just a short girl problem, but a problem for everyone who walks/takes public transportation more than the car).

Oh flats… I have such mixed feelings about them, especially being petite and curvy. They’re comfortable and oh-so-easy to wear, and they do keep me from breaking my ankcle on cobblestones, but… I still always feel better in heels. I do think I’ll be wearing more flats on my blog this season, though, because it’s a more accurate representation of how I really dress! Nice to know we’re in this together ๐Ÿ™‚

I live in flats as I broke my ankle twice on the same foot!

I am a short girl who love flats. I think once you learn how to wear them and feel confident, you won’t want to go back!

Honestly I’m all for wearing flats now. My poor feet just can’t take heels for very long these days so even though I’m petite and my husband is a giant I’m all about comfort these days ๐Ÿ˜‰

i am 5’4″ and a similar shape to you and i live in flats. i tried to do the heels thing when i started my new job this summer, but now that it’s cold and rainy (i live in seattle), i’ve reverted back to comfy loafers and flat boots for work. how do you do it?

I’ve never been good at walking in most heels (unless they’re a cone heel) so I’m more of a flats girl myself! Those shoes are sweet… and that jacket you have on reminds me of one I just tried on at Old Navy (and convinced myself I didn’t need). Looks super cute on you though… you’re making me regret my decision ๐Ÿ™‚

I live in flats at work, but I always feel a bit frumpy when I pair them with dresses or skirts!

I’m short and curvy and wouldn’t change my flats ever. The highest I go is with wedges other than that I don’t own any heels. Donยดt get me wrong I love how they look, I’m just not able to walk in them.

You look great. And at least where you are, itยดs still warm, you can still wear flats. Iยดm in Norway, and itยดs freaking cold here. Sometimes, I like to wear flats, but I prefer more to walk in heels ๐Ÿ™‚

You always layer your coats and vests so beautifully! I also feel much more put together when I’m wearing heels, although I wear flats 95% of the time. I think you styled your flats perfectly for your body type and you don’t look bulky at all!

I think you look adorable from head to toe. And those shoes are so cute too. I’m only 5’2″ on a good day, and though short, I’m not petite. I wear flats about 95% of the time. I do have some heels and I call them my sit down shoes. I just find flats easier to get around in.

I love the comfort of flats, but being short I never feel as cute in flats as I do in heels. It’s such a sartorial conundrum!
