how to get nice hair
As my tresses have gotten noticeably longer over the past few months, I’ve been receiving more inquiries about all things hair-related. And while I’d previously created a video tutorial here showing you the method of how I style it, I thought I would also share some of my favourite products and hair tips today to try to address some of your questions. Here we go!

  • To prep I’ve been growing my hair out for years now (since getting it cut into a too-short bob over 6 years ago), but know how important it is to get regular trims. My thick hair becomes pretty unruly if left unkempt for too long, so I get it cut every 3 months or so. My stylist is Roberto Sousa at Nadia Albano Style Inc. – he works every Saturday and is as sweet as he is talented!
  • To nourish I’ve been using this oil on the ends of my hair whenever I wash it and it has done amazing things for shine and strength! It’s pricey, but just a drop or two is enough – a little goes a long way. I’ve also done the baking soda and apple cider vinegar thing in the past and found that it worked marvellously for me personally, but I couldn’t bear the smell. If you can, it’s worth giving a shot after doing a bit of research on this method! Shampoo and conditioner wise, I truthfully just get whatever’s on sale and alternate between a few. That’s probably not what a pro would tell you to do but it doesn’t seem to make much of a difference for me.

  • To protect Since I use a flat iron on my hair 4-5 times a week, it’s important to protect it. I use this before I put any heat to my hair  – it’s inexpensive and effective. I also try to limit shampooing my hair to every other day, and air dry exclusively for the most part (just briefly blow-drying my bangs so they fall properly).
  • To style I feel like I’ve talked about this product time and time again, but this spray has pretty much become my miracle worker. You know how sometimes when your hair gets long, it feels really weighed down and flat at the top? This prevents that beautifully and provides volume, while also acting as a dry shampoo. I don’t often splurge on beauty products, but this is the one thing I recommend to friends time and time again.
  • Inside out It may seem obvious, but what we put into our bodies will ultimately show on the outside (says the girl who finds herself eating some form of refined sugar nearly every single day). Regardless, I get my 8 glasses of water daily and my diet naturally consists of lots of foods that promote healthy hair: things like blueberries, salmon, spinach, and greek yogurt to name a few.

  1. Your hair always looks amazing Jen, so thanks for sharing your secrets! I love the Oribe dry texturizing spray, it smells soooooo good. My favorite oil for putting on the ends of my hair is the oil from Shu Uemura, but I’m interested in giving the Tatcha one a try!

    Great post!

  2. Thanks for sharing your secrets – I buy my shampoo and conditioner the same way! My hair is the just as shiny (or dull…haha) regardless of what kind of shampoo and conditioner I use.
