Skincare Secret: Oatmeal

January 13, 2012

I guess this secret isn’t actually really a secret: ever since I adopted this practice about half a year ago, I’ve been raving about it to nearly everyone I know. In short, using oatmeal to wash my face has eliminated my need for any chemical injected cleansers and it is now all I use. I do this once a day (in the shower at night) and follow with toner and moisturizer. It has normalized the oils in my skin and in the mornings I now just tone and moisturize. My skin has also evened out considerably and breakouts are more in control than they have ever been!

I first found out about oatmeal as a cleanser from bubzbeauty on YouTube and I think she does a wonderful job of describing the process. Simply watch this video to find out how you can get started!
Also, please note: I don’t wear foundation so oatmeal cleanses my skin sufficiently at the end of the day. If you do wear it, I’d suggest using oatmeal in the morning before you put your make up on and using your regular cleanser to remove your make up at night.
———

Other tips to keep your skin looking its best (most are probably obvious, but are good reminders):
– Wash your bed sheets weekly
– Wash your make up brushes weekly
– Drink your required daily intake of water
– Exercise regularly. Sweat = ridding of toxins!
– Get the amount of sleep that your body needs
– Be diligent in your skincare routine!

Have you tried it? Let me know in the comments! Still need convincing? Check out these nearly flawless reviews of oatmeal on Makeupalley.
Questions? As always, you can ask me on Formspring!

I have been using oatmeal to clean my face for a month or so now. But at the moment I am having an allergic reaction. Not sure if it has to do with the oatmeal or the new creme I’ve used lately (a new one – all organic though), so I am just cutting back on both for the time being. I also got a bit over-excited with the oatmeal and used it twice per day, which might have been too rough on my skin as well. Oh well, lesson learned!

Leonie, I think there is a good chance your reaction came from it being used twice a day. Since it does serve to exfoliate as well I am guessing it was too harsh for your skin. Hope your skin is feeling better soon!

I have never heard of using oatmeal for your face but I had a very severe skin reaction after giving birth that spread through my whole body. It really relieved the severe itch I was facing. Thanks for this, I am going to follow this regime.

I’ve been using oatmeal for a bit now as well (after seeing your last post on your beauty/skincare regimin), but I just keep on going back to my Cetaphil since my dad is wondering what’s happening to his oatmeal supply 😉 haha!

I love BubzBeauty, she’s so adorable and just bubbly in general!

    Have a fantastic weekend xo!

I wear light make up everyday ( no foundation) and I don’t think oatmeal does a good job on remove make up, otherwise it best for skin ,my face feel so soft after I use it. I think it best for morning.

I’ve been using this for awhile thanks to your tip, and seriously, I have noticed a huge difference. I’m especially finding it amazing during the winter as it moisturizes and leaves that very subtle film on your face, I think it helps protect the skin. Seriously so indebted to you for this wonderful tip!

I have wanted to try this, but because both wear foundation and because it’s so warm here in Hawaii, I have to cleanse twice daily with a cleanser my dermatologist recommended. However, I always make sure it’s parabens and SLS free, and I often use natural substitutes on other things. I have a recipe for a great home-made natural toner if you’re interested.

I could use this in place of my exfoliant, however. I have watched Bubz’s beauty video, and I adore her skin tips. I’ll have to try this, but we need to replace our current oats with quick rolled oats instead.

    Great tips!

Cleanse your skin regularly. A very effective skin care tip that helps in getting rid of the dirt and other harsh elements from your skin. Cleansing is especially important when you have been out of your house as you are going exposed to pollutants, dust etc. This skin care tip also advocates the use of Luke warm water for cleansing.

I’m sure this stuff is great, but I’ve had good results from using actual Manuka honey on my face. For the first time, it is clear, soft, balanced and not red. It’s a pretty cheap alternative.Best Face Wash
