The Classic Summer Piece ft. Power of My People

June 11, 2019

how to style a white shirt

When it comes to wardrobe staples, I can’t think of too many styles more versatile than the classic white button down shirt. Refined yet casual, a good white shirt can work in so many different environments and lifestyles, and be worked into countless looks.

Recently, I added this short-sleeved, linen version from local brand Power of My People to my closet, and I literally wore it three days in a row! And if it didn’t need a wash, I’m sure I would’ve continued. The breezy fabric content is perfect for summer, and the fit somehow manages to be both relaxed and tailored at once. It’s also very tie-able, which basically makes the styling potential quadruple (and it’s also my favourite way to wear a button up shirt). It does wrinkle easily because of the fabric, but I honestly don’t mind at all: I like the look and personally think it adds to the charm.

Since it’s been some time since my last style post, I thought I’d go double duty this time and show you a couple of ways I wore the piece during my first three-day stint with it. I wore the first to a casual backyard BBQ, and the second will be a go-to for many summer events that call for slightly more put-together attire (perhaps a patio date night).

There’s also a coupon code at the end of the post to save 20% if you’d like to purchase a shirt, so read on!

DRESSED DOWN

While I don’t quite have the guts to pull off a full on Canadian tuxedo, I quite like the slightly subtler rendition when it’s done with a pair of shorts. The combo of denim and white is such a summer classic and requires next to no effort to style, which is ideal for warm and lazy weekend days.

I paired the shirt with a relaxed denim short (the only pair that’s ever worked for my pear shaped body) and a couple of my current favourite Everlane pieces: I’ve been throwing this jacket on top of everything lately, and the sandals are perfect for easy on/off days when I’m not doing a ton of walking, since they’re comfortable but don’t offer much support.

DRESSED UP

I’m a big fan of tonal dressing, especially with lighter hues in the summer. Aside from the pulled together aesthetic, wearing the same colour on top and bottom creates a sort of faux romper look without the bathroom break inconvenience.

To tie my Power of My People shirt for this look, I simply did the same bow as the first outfit then flipped it underneath itself. I also unbuttoned a couple of extra buttons to lend to a more retro vibe, and paired it with a light tan purse and shoes for visual interest without overtaking the look. P.S. Lower heels have been my jam since becoming a mom, and these Miista ones are my current favourite!

ABOUT THE BRAND

Power of My People is a Vancouver based brand that does beautiful, responsibly made shirts for women and men. The co-owners Jess and Kyle started by literally making all of the shirts on their apartment floor. Each shirt took 18 hours each to make!

Although the shirts are now crafted by local, expert technicians, much remains the same: they still source the highest quality natural fibres and the shirts are designed to be wear-forever favourites. I love that Jess and Kyle create their clothes to be key pieces in your closet even as your style changes and evolves.
