Hello 2017, hello fresh start! I hope your first few days of the year have been treating you well. Brian and I took some time off to spend our inaugural Christmas together as a married couple, and personally it’s been a little hard to get back into the swing of things. We spent the last few days on the couch watching the OA and extending our holiday diet for slightly too long, so as you can imagine I’ve been feeling a teeny bit lethargic. But here we are, and I’m excited to be up and running again!
When I recapped my style lessons for 2016 and resolutions for the upcoming year in this post, I wrote that I’d been feeling bored in my clothes and wanted to be more creatively inspired with my wardrobe again — while still taking steps to consume more thoughtfully. I’ve been wearing essentially every piece in this outfit all winter long, so it’s admittedly become pretty ho-hum for me. I recently pulled out this summer skirt (which I love so much I also have in white, and both happened to be second hand purchases) and styled in in place of my usual black denim for a change in silhouette. I doubled up on the tights and thermal tops underneath to make it more weather-appropriate, and altogether the change was just enough to feel fresh and easy, and it helped inject a dose of inspiration to my daily dressing.

Thanks so much Diana! Happy New Year 🙂
I LOVE HOW YOU TOOK A SEASONAL ITEM AND MADE IT SEASONLESS. IT’S CRAZY HOW WARM YOU CAN BE IF YOU HAVE WOOL TIGHTS ON. LOVE THE BOOTS, AND PINING FOR YOUR LEATHER JACKET – SOMETHING ON MY LIST THIS YEAR.
AND AS ALWAYS, YOUR PHOTOS ARE STUNNING.
Thanks so much Andrea! And totally agree… I only started doing legitimate thermals this year and it’s changed my winter dressing completely!
Great article, love it. BTW I’ve just written this post on 20 best peplum dresses and thought you might like it :O)
Dear Jen,
I have been an ardent follower of your blog for years and am excited that i will be traveling to calgary, Canada for a conference early February.
Unfortunately I have always resided in warmer climate regions and am at a total and complete loss for how to bear the winter weather there – according to weather forecasts the temperatures are expected to drop to a low of possibly -12 in canada during that time of the year….I would appreciate any suggestions you had for how to be prepared for a work conference on a budget
P.s. I have a single cardigan to my name – while it is warm enough to deal with our winters that have lows of 65, I highly doubt it will hold up in calgary – please help!
Hi Zaina, how exciting that you’re coming to Canada! Though we live in Vancouver and it’s not nearly as cold as the rest of the country, we’ve had a pretty intense winter so I hope I can provide what’s worked for me!
First, I think having a good base layer is crucial. Icebreaker clothing makes some really great ethically made tops and leggings out of Merino wool that can help keep you very warm (http://ca.icebreaker.com/en/baselayers/tech-top-long-sleeve-crewe/100523.html?dwvar_100523_color=001). That being said, Uniqlo’s heattech line will probably fit better underneath business appropriate attire, and are more of a budget option. I have one that I wear nearly everyday (a bit gross, I know), and it’s crazy how much warmth it adds without creating bulk.
If you are open to purchasing anything, I’d recommend a cashmere sweater (Everlane has a great cashmere crew for $100!) and wool trousers.
In terms of accessories, I’d make sure to invest in a good hat, a pair of gloves, and socks in warm, natural materials like wool and cashmere. Keeping your head and extremities warm works wonders in maintaining your temperature.
Lastly, if you don’t want to purchase a base layer for your bottoms, I’ve found that even wearing a pair of nylons underneath my pants adds a significant amount of warmth.
I hope this helps! Good luck!
tHANK YOU SO MUCH! I HAD NO IDEA WHERE TO GET STARTED. THIS IS SO VERY HELPFUL!
