I recently realized that I am a very safe dresser. Most of my friends wouldn’t agree with this as my closet contains substantial amounts of bold colours and patterns, but in actuality I tend to only stick to a handful of silhouettes that have worked for me. While this may be a good thing, it has taken much of the fun out of dressing up. Finding a pair of 100% silk trousers for $10 at a consignment store a while back was the perfect opportunity to do a bit of experimenting: though it’s not a big leap, the higher waist & looser fit of the pants were enough to give putting an outfit together some pizazz that hasn’t been there in far too long.

p.s. In case you haven’t noticed, this vest has become, hands down, my most worn piece this entire winter. I’m now thoroughly convinced that a black faux fur vest is a wardrobe staple.

  1. I love the first shot, the lighting is so perfect! It’s so difficult to create that same mood indoors but your photo looks so well done! I also love the yellow sweater and the gorgeous lip colour you’ve paired it with. Another wonderfully done post!

  2. With all of the amazing ideas you share on this blog I would never call you a safe dresser! :o) There’s always something new and interesting about each of your outfits!
The yellow sweater looks gorgeous with grey pants… I’m once again inspired!

  4. Super cute, Jen! And I’m the same way, I do tend to stick to a few silhouettes that work for my body (ie: high waisted skirts & dresses that flair away from the hips!) but there are so many different fits & cuts that I really should try out! I would say this attempt was a major success, those trousers are adorable on you!! Casual & a little glam all at the same time! And love the bold lip and bright pop of yellow! Such a fun combo!

  5. Love the outfit! high waisted pants actually really suit you, you should try more! but I’m the same way if something works for my body type then I just stick to it and just experiment with colours and patterns :)

  9. Loooove the look! Good for you for trying a new silhouette, I completely agree with the “safe dressing” aspect on my part as well. Guilty as charged. I think taking a risk once in awhile is kind of nice, we discover new things.

    P.S. $10? WHAT? Insane!

  10. $10 silk pants? What a steal! And I totally agree with being in the comfort zone of dressing (I reuse specific outfits, not so great), but trying out new things is always fun. :)

  13. I think we’re all a bit guilty of sticking to the silhouettes we know work well for us. But it is fun to step outside of the box now and then, and getting beautiful items on consignment is a great way to do it. These pants really are different for you, but they’re gorgeous!

  15. That’s nice to see you wearing your faux fur vest so often! It really adds a great texture to all of your outfits and of course, it must be very warm too. The silk pants look great and I like the different sense of proportions that there are. Have a good Friday! xx

  16. This has to be my favourite look that I’ve seen on you in a while, and that’s saying a lot, because I really love everything that you put together. Those pants are incredible and give such a fresh, new vibe to the outfit. Good example that change is good! :)

  19. You look effortlessly chic. Somehow finding such great pieces for such low prices can seem more exciting than if you were to find the same piece at “regular” prices. It also makes me wonder if I too am sticking with the same silhouettes; I’d never really thought about that aspect. Love learning new things from your blog. =)

  20. Love the silk pants! I definitely have weakness for anything silky.
