When I was growing up, my mom had a couple of pairs of shoes that bugged me a lot. Although they seemed comfy and easy to slip on and off, I thought they were so awkward-looking, like they were missing the back half (why didn’t the shoes cover the heel?!). They were called mules, or slides, and I was thoroughly convinced that they were the ugliest shoes ever. And of course, I told myself I would never be caught dead in footwear that hideous.
Flash forward fifteen years, and boy have the tables turned. Obviously, mules are now one of my favourite shoe styles. The trend did take some time for me to warm up to (do I think they look cool in an unconventional way, or are they just genuinely ugly??), and is definitely not for everyone (my husband calls my black flat slides Robin Hood shoes). But I’ve been documenting my style for long enough to learn to never write anything off when it comes to personal style. Tastes and preferences can and do change, and my 180 degree change of heart toward mules is living proof of that.
