A Sliver of Masculinity

by Jen on Tuesday, February 8, 2011

{Photos by Paul Milaire and Roderick Fung of Fotowok}

Navy trousers, a red plaid scarf, a crew neck sweater.... all elements that one would not be surprised to find in a stylish gentleman's wardrobe. These pants that I found on sale at Zara recently inspired me to build a more mannish outfit than I would usually wear. For all the masculinity present in the pieces, I was surprised at how feminine I actually felt thanks to sky high heels, delicate tights, cat eye sunglasses and a red lip. At the end of the day, changing it up was a good reminder for me to never take getting dressed too seriously.

P.S. In case you missed it, Amrita Singh has generously offered a pair of her beautiful Indian inspired earrings to a reader of her waise choice. Click here to enter!

Wearing: Zara everything (sweater, cape, trousers, sandals), TNA scarf, Joe Fresh bracelet, Wolford tights, Tom Ford sunglasses

Love the tights and how you wore them with the sandals. It's a great look but I haven't tried it yet, not brave enough I guess :)
You look fab as usual!

I really wish Zara existed here in Detroit. Their sales are really amazing. I need those pants in my life. I really do.

And yes, you're right. Never take dressing too seriously. Have fun. That's what fashion is about!

I wouldn't have thought to mix red plaid with a quasi-leopard print sweater, but it works so well here.

Ooh... It's really exciting to see people from across the globe knowing what bak kwa is! You've got a Singaporean bf? Sweet! What country were you previously from?

I love your fashion style, your eyes and smile. You look great in all your clothes including the supposedly gaudy orange coat! Your photos are also professionally taken! What camera do you use and who takes your pictures? =)

IRYC (In response to your comment @ thereafterish.): I was born in Victoria and lived there until I was 5. Then we went back every summer or Christmas Holiday until I was about 11, so I still have LOTS of memories. I went for a few summer holidays while I was still in High School, then my husband and I visit every other year for the holidays (the inevitable married holiday trade-offs!). I also got married at Royal Roads University (AKA. Lex Luthor's Mansion/Xman Castle) in 2009. I LOVE IT ALL.

Don't know much about Vancouver, but I did explore around a bit after our wedding and fell in love with Yaletown and Simon Frazer Uni (Battlestar Galactica nerds).

Skincare: I'm going back to school and revamping my life--early middle life crisis (I'm only 29)--to train to become an Aveda Aesthetician. I love skincare that much and that's how seriously I take it.

I hope you'll subscribe to my channel once I start posting! :)

Oh my goodness I love this outfit! You are always spot on my dear. The masculine touches are perfect with the heels and the red lipstick. & I can't remember if I responded about the Aldo heels. They are very high, but the platform makes them so comfortable! The sole is leather I believe, but it looks a bit iffy so I will probably put a no-slip grip on the bottom :)

Oh my gosh. How have I not stumbled onto your blog before this girl? I absolutely adore your style and your whole take on fashion too- I've never really been one to get all caught up in trends either, it's more about what feels right to you (a great skirt doesn't hurt though!). I love that you're in Van too, I just moved here last week and have fallen in love with the place! I don't know my way around though, so it's always welcoming to hear about good shopping places and such.
Anyways, this is a novel! But both the outfit and photos are divine! xx

I've really grown to love your style Jen! I can't help but come back to your outfit posts time after time ;)

I have been on hiatus since I left my new camera at my boyfriends back in Toronto so I can't take photos until next weekend! I also have midterms coming up so it doesn't help either :S I hope you're doing well :)

And to answer your question, yes I do make all my collages on photoshop :P It's pretty simple haha I just use the Polygonal Lasso Tool to crop my photos and then I splatter them together onto a blank document haha!

I love this outfit! You did a great job of making the more masculine pieces look really feminine! The combination is incredible! I love the rolled-up pants, the sandals over tights and the cape over a long-sleeve sweater.....amazing! I think I need to find myself a cape now.
