Obakki Fall/Winter 2011

by Jen on Friday, April 29, 2011

{all photos property of her waise choice}

Last night, I joined approximately 600 of Vancouver's most stylish for Obakki's Fall/Winter 2011 fashion show. Obakki is self-described as a "Vancouver based luxury fashion brand that focuses on contemporary modern style through easy-to-wear and effortlessly cool clothing". Their first time ever public show was held at St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church in Downtown Vancouver, and it was filled with versatile, quality pieces that draped beautifully and had lovely movement. While the cuts were simple and no-fuss, the designs were infused with interesting and thoughtful details that transformed them into classic Obakki. I will let the looks speak for themselves: here are a few photos of the runway that I snapped last night.

And some lovely Vancouver bloggers that I was so fortunate to run into (many for the first time!). Left to Right: Laura Beth, Alicia, Monika, Alexandra, myself, Lisa and Mina!

P.S. Another great thing about Obakki is that it also supports humanitarian causes with their foundation, by "finding and nourishing creativity in all parts of their world". They sell pieces specially designed for this purpose. The most recent Obakki Foundation collection is based on their current cause: they visited Cameroon, Africa and asked 150 children in three orphanages what makes them sad, afraid, and happy. The designs were based off of their answers, and 100% of the proceeds from the sales of this collection go right back into it. I highly encourage you to check it out!

Bumble Bee

For reasons that I am completely unaware of, David has always despised horizontally tiered pieces of clothing. He doesn't usually object to anything I wear, but I still remember many summers ago when we were just friends: I wore a bright teal tiered tank when we were hanging out and he told me I looked like a go-go girl. When we started dating and he discovered it in my closet, he practically begged me to get rid of it. Since he never complains about my clothing, I decided to do as he asked. So imagine my surprise when we were shopping a few months ago and he actually picked out this sunny yellow dress and told me he liked it! It was such a momentous occasion that I had to bring it home ;)

The ultimate in glamour, mixing black, white and gold is an equation for instant sophistication. This classic combination of shades is one of my favourites to wear and what I dream of adorning my future home with one day. This week I created ensembles in this shade for multiple occasions, in hopes of demonstrating the right colour combination makes it that much easier to look polished wherever you go!

Boyfriend Inspired

Since David's last name begins with an 'H', he (and his family) have a penchant for all things Hermès (how cute!). And for as long as I've known him, he has almost always preferred to wear this reversible belt on the bright signature orange side instead of the classic black. Well, he's obviously way more stylish than I am, as it wasn't until recently that I realized how perfect it is as a colourful accent. He was sweet enough to let me borrow it today to instill a pop of cheer into my otherwise simple look.

P.S. Yes, my jeans totally do need to be shortened! Not foolin' anyone with those bunched up hems.

London Calling

by Jen on Tuesday, April 19, 2011

In exactly four weeks I will be jetting off to Northern Europe with my parents! We'll be spending a few days in London, acquainting ourselves with Copenhagen and finally boarding a ship for a cruise of the Baltic. In all honesty though, most of my excitement is reserved for London: hoping to find some gems at flea markets, shop the London high street, experience traditional afternoon tea at Fortnum & Mason, take in a show at West End, and of course keep my eyes peeled for fashion inspiration to bring home!

I would love recommendations of places to visit if you've been!

Bold Phrase

by Jen on Sunday, April 17, 2011

Out of all the positive things that blogging has brought (and fellow bloggers know that there are many!), one of the best aspects is that it's driven me out of my comfort zone in many ways. One such way has been in my style and beauty risks: just last year I definitely would not have had the guts to try out a bright fuschia lipstick, but last week I boldly wandered into the lipstick aisle (for the first time in my life, no less) during a trip to the drugstore and in the vast array of options picked up this one. After searching for it online afterward, I realized that I had by chance gotten one of the most loved colours out there!

I'm curious: how has blogging influenced you?

colour me captivated: Sunshine and Blush

by Jen on Friday, April 15, 2011

Originally I had wanted to create a post filled with casual outfits as an ode to Coachella, but as I was Polyvore-ing away I quickly realized that, one, these looks were not exactly music festival appropriate, and two, that there was a trend forming in the items I was picking. So instead of forcing myself to put together outfits to wear at an event that I will probably never want to go to in my life, I just ran with it and voila- a little bit of girly and a little bit of brightness for the weekend.

Better Late than Never...

But I do want to give them away to one of you, so without further ado, the winner of these beautiful Amrita Singh Breese earrings is Sydney of PetiteLittleGirl. Congratulations, Sydney! Please email me your information so I can send them over!

The End of a Season

by Jen on Saturday, April 9, 2011

Last Friday, we put on our party dresses & dancing shoes and went off to celebrate our coming university graduation. It's so surreal and definitely bittersweet; while I can't wait to get started on my career and inch closer to doing things like starting a family, these past five years have been the best of my life thus far and I am sad to leave that behind!

I had a dilemma on what to wear (and a few lovely ladies gave their input on Twitter), but I finally chose an ASOS Black dress (petite version, since sold out) that I picked up several months ago. I probably wouldn't have paired it with the clutch that I did had I been afforded more options, but I got it last minute at a mall in a small town for a steal because I didn't have anything that went well with it on me. Either way, it didn't really matter because we had an amazing time and the last thing on my mind was whether or not I matched!

P.S. I can foresee many you girls liking it, so my friend Tiffany's dress is from H&M!
