Easy Weekend

by Jen on Monday, January 31, 2011

Waking up to sunshine this weekend was unexpected and wonderful to say the least. I couldn't remember the last time I wanted to get out of bed so badly and get outside! I threw on a casual and comfortable outfit, looking forward to walking outside for hours with the warmth on my face. The sunlight proved to be deceiving though, as throwing on an overcoat was barely enough to prevent me from catching a cold from the frigid air and we had to quickly duck inside immediately after these photos were taken (see how ridiculously cold I look in the second photo? Haha). In any case, it brought me great joy to prematurely dress for the coming Spring even though it was short-lived and I can't wait until it gets truly warm again!

What are you looking forward to wearing this Spring?

Golden Accents

by Jen on Tuesday, January 25, 2011

I am a lover of gold. Heck, it doesn't even matter if it's real: the only genuine yellow gold jewelry in my possession are a pair of tiny studs given to me by my grandmother and a simple necklace from my mother. Lucky for me (and my student budget), the fake stuff does the trick just as well and I'm rarely ever in silver jewelry if I can help it. From the hue of my necklaces to the hardware on my handbags, having a pop of gold in my ensemble can quickly make me feel pretty and put together without much effort. Although my go-to earrings are still pearl studs, this large, semi obnoxious pair of gold baubles are a fresh and quirky alternative. For $1.50 a pop after an extra $2 off the sale price, they are a happy addition into my jewelry collection and something that I know I'll be constantly wearing year round.

What about you? Are you a gold or silver wearer?

P.S. Remember to enter the giveaway below for a pair of Amrita Singh earrings!

Maxed Out

A very simple ensemble today to showcase the beautiful vintage maxi skirt (from Germany!) I found on Boxing Day of all days. The rounded, pleated waistline is oh so flattering and differentiates it just enough to place it in a class all its own. These were taken on a perfectly windy day and the skirt flowed beautifully in the breeze!

Last month I mentioned in my Flare Magazine feature that Amrita Singh is my current favourite jewelry designer. So you can imagine how thrilled I was when they kindly sent over these pretty Breese earrings. Check back in a few days for a chance to win a pair of your own, valued at $100USD!

P.S. I apologize for the blurriness in some of the photos, they were snapped quickly and in low light!

Recycled Fashion

{Photos by Paul Milaire and Roderick Fung of Fotowok}

As a little girl, I remember seeing my mother sport a "clown" like coat once in a while: an oversized, sweatshirt like number in an almost unbearably blinding shade of orange. Since I'd always been used to seeing very safe options from her when it came to fashion (she often wore sweater sets and trousers to work), I just didn't understand this choice. How things have now changed: I opened her coat closet the other day and was astounded at how I never saw the potential in this before: oversized was now chic, the sweatshirt shape was now "cocoon", and the orange? So on trend now as one of the Spring 2011 Runway's most well-loved hues.

Ladies: Are there any pieces you remembering seeing on your mother in your childhood that you just did not get, but now have grown to love?

Fur Real??!!

by Jen on Wednesday, January 12, 2011

The transition between a break and going back to school is always a little bit tough. I'm thankful for being able to go to school, but the night owl in me undeniably dreads the change from sleeping in until noon most days to 8AM classes three days a week. So much to my delight, we were graced with a morning off on the 3rd day of classes courtesy of the snow. After it melted off the ground in the early afternoon, though, classes resumed. But since I only had morning classes today, what did that mean? A blissful day of sleeping in, relaxing and reading in bed. Hooray!

P.S. Please pardon the cheesy and unfunny title. I am genuinely a little bit embarrassed.

It's a Nice Day for a Fotowok

by Jen on Monday, January 10, 2011

I'm so excited to introduce you to my new part-time photographers: Paul Milaire and Roderick Fung of the Vancouver based Fotowok. Although the company is in its early stages, the talent of its photographers is not. Meeting these guys through a mutual friend was a huge blessing. Although they are young, Paul and Rod impressed me right off the bat with their professionalism and attention to detail. We went for the shoot yesterday and the shots were delivered today, edited and processed, in the nick of time! They were also awesome at making me feel at ease. I am thrilled to inform you that we'll be working together from time to time starting now!

No fear, though, my wonderful boyfriend will still be doing photos for me regularly in between these shoots. Although he is always willing and always delivers, I'm glad to be able to give him a break once in a while since photography isn't his chosen profession. And speaking of the boyfriend, isn't this jacket from BCBG lovely? Stuffed with a cozy 90% down and 10% feather filling, it is the most stylish and gorgeous puffer jacket I've ever seen (and it's warm!). I saw it in stores the other day and although it was on sale for 60% off, it was still more than I wanted to spend. He sweetly decided to surprise me and get it for me. Thank you sweetheart!

Whatever the Weather

by Jen on Thursday, January 6, 2011

Living in a city with weather as volatile as Vancouver, it can be difficult to be consistent with photo taking and blog updating. Sometimes I look at blogs from sunny California or Singapore with envy knowing that 9 out of 10 days throughout the year provide photo-worthy daylight for them. After being discouraged a few times this week, we decided that I had a perfectly good room to take photos in and voila... I just wore whatever I wanted and it was like Summer again!

The gold nail polish was for New Year's festivities, but I wasn't ready to take it off just yet so the glitter made it into the shots!

P.S. Thank you boyfriend for your patience and perfectionist attitude in taking these photos for me! You are the absolute BESTEST.

Time to Recover

by Jen on Sunday, January 2, 2011

After ringing in the New Year feeling sick, my last 32 of 36 hours were literally spent either sleeping or in bed. In spite of the fact that it was completely unproductive, I must say that it felt absolutely amazing and that although I am still in the process of recovering (which explains why I look so drained in these photos), I can't deny the incredible powers of simply getting lots of shuteye!
